Often, movies are accused of creating overtly grotesque images to create a dramatic effect. 1917 does not do that. Instead, it stays as true as possible to the actual effects of war. Yes, it shows people dying and the brutality of it, but it does that without overdoing it.

The portrayal of the World War I era is exceptional as viewers see the various uniforms and weapons that these soldiers were armed with. Fans feel like they are transported back in time to this period the moment the film begins as the state of the trenches says enough about their welfare.

People were sent flying through the air by the explosions of artillery fire, which is not at all realistic. The exploding shells would have torn them to pieces. That's also one of the reasons why 1917 is an action movie for me.

Although the characters and plot are fictitious, the sets and many of the discussions and activities between the soldiers are historically accurate. Soldiers would often be stationed all along the trenches just waiting for action. Soldiers would also drink, write letters and play games while waiting.
