Disney+’s Mulan (2020) is a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated movie from 1998. The remake is directed by Niki Caro and stars Yifei Liu in the lead role of Hua Mulan, a young girl who disguises herself as a man to join the Imperial Army and fights off the Huns to bring honor to her family.

One of the most significant changes in the new version of Mulan is the exclusion of the musical numbers from the original movie. Instead, the actors rely on pure acting and martial arts techniques to deliver an authentic fight experience. To ensure its accuracy, Mulan also featured a majority of Asian actors and actresses and utilized Mandarin as the primary language in the film.

Another notable difference in Mulan (2020) is the expansion of the story. The character of Mulan is given more depth and empathy, and her journey in the army is more personal, with new supporting characters alongside her. Additionally, the dynamic between Mulan and the villain, Bori Khan (played by Jason Scott Lee), is more layered, making the final showdown more dramatic.

Mulan (2020) made its debut in September 2020 on Disney+ for an additional fee to subscribers. It was initially intended for a theatrical release but was postponed multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike, Mulan remains a visually stunning and captivating retelling of the legendary heroine story with a modern twist.
