Open Road Films is an American film production and distribution company that released the science-fiction movie A-X-L in 2018. The movie was directed by Oliver Daly and starred Alex Neustaedter, Becky G, and Thomas Jane. It tells the story of a teenage boy who forms a close relationship with a robotic dog created for military purposes.
A-X-L did not perform well at the box office and was considered a flop. Despite this, Open Road Films continued to produce and release other films, including the action-thriller Hotel Artemis. However, the company faced financial troubles and in 2019 was sold to Raven Capital Management for $87.5 million. Following the sale, Raven Capital took over the rights to all finished films in the Open Road library , with the exception of A-X-L.
Today, Open Road Films is owned by Global Road Entertainment, which bought the company in 2018 for $28.8 million from AMC Networks. Its current productions include movies like Serenity, a neo-noir thriller starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Despite its rocky history, Open Road Films remains a part of the entertainment industry and continues to produce and distribute films.
