Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not the least of which is an encounter with Gollum (Andy Serkis) and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey / Film synopsis

The most prominent theme in The Hobbit is bravery, and the transformation of Bilbo Baggins from a timid homebody living quietly in his hobbit hole in the Shire to the brave hero at the center of a dangerous adventure.

The Hobbit's main theme is Bilbo's development into a hero, which more broadly represents the development of a common person into a hero. At the beginning of the story, Bilbo is timid, comfortable, and complacent in his secure little hole at Bag End.

The movie features intense violence and numerous scary characters, made more disturbing by 3D effects. This makes it unsuitable for children under 12 years and some children up to 14 years, even those who have enjoyed the book. At 169 minutes, it's also a very long movie for children.

The Hobbit is telling us to take risks. This is what life is about, taking yourself out of your comfort zone and seeing what you are made of. Bilbo realises that there is more to life and the world than just being an ordinary Hobbit living in The Shire.

To determine your higher-level quest, determine what you do well, what you enjoy, and what you think the world needs. At the intersection of these three circles you may find your life's quest.

The Hobbit : Main Theme Song (Suite) - Song of the Lonely Mountain - YouTube.

In the story, Bilbo Baggins is compelled to leave his ordinary hobbit life and join a band of dwarves and a wizard to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasures from Smaug, the evil dragon who stole it from Thorin's ancestors. Breaking away from a monotonous life was proved a difficult task for the tiny hero.

The Hobbit is a wonderful tale of unexpected adventure, bravery, overcoming, and acceptance in the world of middle earth where strange and wonderful creatures abound. Fairies, elves, dwarves, hobbits, and goblins abound in a masterfully described world. These books were also a catalyst to my own writing.

However, I would very much recommend reading the Hobbit first as it introduces so many concepts, ideas and characters (like The Shire, Elves, Gollum and Gandalf) who and which will enrich your experience and enjoyment of the later books enormously.

Ages 9–12. By this age, kids are much more independent and more than ready to enjoy reading The Hobbit on their own! Since The Lord of the Rings is a little more dense, I wouldn't recommend that just yet - but it's coming!

Can they handle nearly three hours of Hobbit fantasy? Likely not. But if your kids are ready and willing for a double dose of Tolkien, The Hobbit is geared toward kids age 10 and up. The material is softer than the Rings books, and Jackson's movie follows suit.

''The Hobbit'' by J.R.R. Tolkien fits into the genre of children's fantasy novels, otherwise known as juvenile fantasy, due to its focus on fantastical elements and its characters' paths towards maturity.

The grim battles and fire-breathing beasts of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit drew inspiration from the author's own real experiences fighting at the Somme in World War I. Tolkien had two close friends die in the battle, and fought across ground filled with rotting dead bodies in one of the deadliest battles in human history.

Throughout the story, Tolkien uses many different objects and ideas to represent something beyond its literal meaning. These objects are called symbols. Bilbo's sword, which is called Sting, the One Ring, the Arkenstone of Thrain, and Light and Darkness are some of the most important symbols.

The Hobbit's plot and characters combined the ancient heroic Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian epics Tolkien studied with the middle-class rural England in which he lived. In many ways, the novel's charm and humor lie in transplanting a simple, pastoral Englishman of the 1930s into a heroic medieval setting.
