Columbia Pictures' 2015 science-fiction film "Chappie" tells the story of a sentient robot designed to be a police officer in Johannesburg, South Africa. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp and stars Sharlto Copley as the voice and motion capture of Chappie, along with Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver in supporting roles.

In the movie, a company called Tetravaal has created a robotic police force to help curb crime in the city. After a successful test run, the company's chief engineer, Deon Wilson (played by Dev Patel), steals a damaged robot and reprograms it with a new type of artificial intelligence. However, the group of gangsters who had initially stolen the robot have made a deal with a rival engineer (played by Hugh Jackman) at Tetravaal, who wants to sabotage Deon's creation.

As Chappie, the robot, learns about the world and begins to develop a personality, he struggles to navigate the dangerous streets of Johannesburg and the conflicting desires of his creators. The movie explores themes of consciousness and what makes humans human, as well as the ethical dilemmas involved with AI technology and violence.

Despite mixed reviews, "Chappie" was a box-office success, grossing over $100 million worldwide. The film's use of motion capture technology and visual effects has been praised, as well as Copley's performance as Chappie.

Blomkamp's new film, “Chappie,” which begins its worldwide rollout March 4, shows off a different side of the city, and spotlights more South African talent, both below- and above-the-line. “Johannesburg can be both township and completely urban and almost American,” Blomkamp says.

Chappie is the eponymous robot protagonist of the science-fiction film CHAPPiE. Created by robotics expert Deon Wilson using a revolutionary new A.I. system installed aboard a damaged SCOUT Police Robot, Chappie is capable of thinking for itself and making its own decisions.

"Chappie" is a flawed but entertaining film with "robocops" fighting against crime. However, Tetravaal is totally unbelievable as a security company with the easy access of employees to the facility and software.

Chappie is a metaphor of every single parents worst nightmare. Their child being forced into a game of tug of war where their values are pitted against the values and actions of the other parent that they inherently disagree with.

Chappie's origins began after the release of District 9, with Weta Workshop contributing a wave of designs of the character in 2009/2010. After Blomkamp's Elysium, Weta returned to Chappie concepts – basing them in part on robots the director had incorporated into his earlier short films such as Tetra Vaal and Tempbot.

Most of Chappie's problems stem from its terrible pacing, making it impossible for it to tell the story it wants to tell in its time constraint. This is exemplified in Chappie's character as a whole. The film isn't able to get in all the complexity to his character that it clearly wishes it could.

In the film, Chappie - a decommissioned police robot in Johannesburg, South Africa - has its standard rule-based AI software reprogrammed with an experimental consciousness program by Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), the coder who developed the software powering the police bots.

The new film “Chappie” features an artificially intelligent robot that becomes sentient and must learn to navigate the competing forces of kindness and corruption in the human world.

Parents need to know that Chappie is from South African director/sci-fi specialist Neill Blomkamp, who also made District 9. Despite the movie's Short Circuit-meets-A.I. overtones, Chappie is far too violent to be appropriate for tweens or even young teens.

Shoppers at major supermarkets have seen Mars' pet food brands increase prices in recent weeks, including popular pet favourites such as Chappie, Pedigree and Whiskas. The price hikes come after Tesco stopped stocking Mars pet food brands on its shelves due to a dispute over the prices, as reported by The Grocer .

Created in 1948 by Johannesburg's Chapelat confectionary company, Chappies initially sold two for a penny, making them the cheapest chews on the block. In 2023, they still occupy this market segment and are available everywhere from suburban corner cafés to township taxi rank street stalls and rural spaza shops.
