The Purpose of Skyscrapers
Although they were first used as office spaces in city centers, they have become more and more popular as a housing option as well. Ideally, the concept of fitting more people into a smaller piece of land and building upwards would have created lower buying or renting prices.
But that's the best part about disaster movies, watching everyday heroes rise over insurmountable obstacles, such as pesky earthquakes, annoying typhoons or flaming high-rise buildings, without even breaking a sweat. “Skyscraper” could join the ranks of some great disaster movies.
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture consulted the film production on the design of the fictitious 225-story megatall skyscraper, with Adrian Smith quoted as saying that "the producer wanted this to be a tower based on real possibilities".
Steel Foundations
The first skyscrapers were built from wood and concrete, but all-steel foundation beams proved a boon to skyscraper construction. Concrete foundations become too heavy as their length increases, so architects needed a new material if they wanted to keep building upward.

The central support structure of a skyscraper is its steel skeleton. Metal beams are riveted end to end to form vertical columns. At each floor level, these vertical columns are connected to horizontal girder beams. Many buildings also have diagonal beams running between the girders, for extra structural support.

The whole story arc plays out in about as cliche of a fashion as you could ever imagine. It's all very underwhelming and disappointing. As for positives they are hard to come by. Some of the visuals are impressive and 'The Rock' does his best to keep things watchable despite being given absolutely no help.
