The cycle refers to the number of strokes a piston completes in a combustion engine. A 4-stroke engine needs four strokes of its piston to burn fuel and generate power: Intake: a downward stroke draws in fuel. Compression: an upward stroke expels exhaust.

Within a four-stroke engine, the pistons are connected to a rotating crankshaft through a connecting rod. Every four strokes of the piston, moving up or down the cylinder, the engine produces power through what is known as the four-stroke cycle.

Because four-cycle engines use four strokes during combustion, they tend to run more efficiently and quietly. Two-cycle trimmers pack more power into a smaller engine. They are capable of producing more horsepower at higher rpms than similarly sized four-cycle engines. They are also lighter.
