All Claritin® for Kids products contain the active ingredient loratadine. They are not the same as Children's Benadryl®, Children's Zyrtec®, Children's Allegra® or Children's Xyzal®, which all contain different active ingredients.

Norton Children's Allergy & Immunology Loratadine (Claritin) can take up to three hours to take effect and may cause minor drowsiness. Fexofenadine (Allegra) can take effect within two hours and also is completely nonsedating. All three medications last for around 24 hours.

Antihistamine such as Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec (or their generic counterparts), may help if their symptoms are due to allergies, however they will not help a cough from an infection. Discuss with your doctor about the need for trialing these medicines and/ or the role of allergy testing.

Benadryl is also used to treat insomnia, motion sickness, and mild cases of Parkinsonism. A main difference between Benadryl and Claritin is that Claritin tends to cause less drowsiness and sedation than Benadryl.

Common Claritin side effects include headache, drowsiness, and fatigue. Less commonly people may experience dry mouth, dizziness, or stomach side effects like nausea or diarrhea. Contact your healthcare provider if any Claritin side effects become too bothersome.

Dry mouth, mild stomach upset, trouble sleeping, dizziness, headache, nervousness, loss of appetite, or thirst may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

If continuous seasonal allergy treatment is needed, second-generation antihistamines like Allegra and Claritin are considered safer since they have a low risk for drowsiness. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an exception to this rule, as it may cause drowsiness in about 10 percent of individuals.

Claritin D or Zyrtec D can be used to treat congestion associated with allergies. If you think your congestion is caused by a cold, Sudafed is recommened. If you also have a cough, take a decongestant that also has an antihistamine in it, like Tylenol Cold and Sinus.

Safe use of Claritin for kids While all forms of Claritin and Claritin-D are safe for use by most children of certain ages, your child may prefer the two forms of Claritin that are labeled for children. They come as grape- or bubblegum-flavored chewable tablets and a grape-flavored syrup.
