Gretel manages to use her powers to send a staff toward Holda, sticking her to the wall over the flames. Her body catches fire until she is fully destroyed, breaking the trance on Hansel and letting Gretel go free. Gretel decides to stay behind at the house while sending Hansel on his way with a horse.

According to the book, Ossegg determined that the fairytale, Hansel and Gretel, was based on the story of a 17th-century baker named Hans Metzler and his sister Grete.

Holda the Witch. Holda is the main antagonist of the 2020 dark fantasy horror film Gretel and Hansel directed by Oz Perkins and released under Orion Pictures. She is an incarnation of the The Evil Witch from the original Hansel and Gretel fairy tale written by the Brothers Gimm.

Perkins explained in an interview that the title was changed because this version focuses on Gretel: "It's awfully faithful to the original story. It's got really only three principal characters: Hansel, Gretel, and the Witch. We tried to find a way to make it more of a coming of age story.

As one of the most inherently scary fairy tales of them all, “Hansel and Gretel” lends itself perfectly to a horror movie setting. Think about it: two children are abandoned by their parents, find themselves lost in a dark forest, and encounter a cannibalistic witch.

The original written version of "Hansel and Gretel" ends with Gretel pushing the witch into the oven which kills her. Gretel frees Hansel, and the two children steal the witch's treasure and return to their cottage.

The witch, who has cannibalistic intentions, intends to fatten Hansel before eventually eating him. However, Gretel saves her brother by pushing the witch into her own oven, killing her, and escaping with the witch's treasure.

The reversing order of names in the title itself already gives a clue about how the movie wants to place Gretel who represents the female gender before Hansel, the male one.

Fun Fact #1 The Grimm Brothers didn't actually call this story Hansel and Gretel. Their original title was Roland and May-Bird and the story that they called Hansel and Gretel had a different plot, where Hansel was turned into a deer and Gretel eventually married the prince who saved them.
