Raspberry flavoring, lemon oil, and vanilla provide the base of flavor. Blue gel food coloring gives the ice cream its signature vivid blue color.

Blue Bunny is born when the Wells brothers hold a “Name that Ice Cream” contest looking for a brand for their ice cream. A Sioux City man submitted “Blue Bunny” and his rendition of the original logo (known as Blu®) and won a whopping $25. (Hey, that was a big deal back then!)

In 1935, Fred and Harry wanted to get back into ice cream but needed a new name for their product. To drum up excitement, they ran a “Name That Ice Cream” contest in the Sioux City Journal with a cash prize of $25. John Vanden Brink submitted the winning name that we're all familiar with today: Blue Bunny.

A Sioux City man won the $25 cash prize for submitting the winning entry, "Blue Bunny," after noticing how much his son enjoyed the blue bunnies in a department store window at Easter time. The winner, an illustrator by trade, also created the first Blue Bunny logo, used on Blue Bunny packaging for nearly 70 years!

The blue ice cream tradition at Kings Island started with a Smurf. In 1982, Kings Island added a new attraction, Smurf's Enchanted Voyage, along with a new food item: blue ice cream.

The publication recently compiled a list of nine ice cream brands, including Blue Bell, that use the lowest quality ingredients. Apparently, Blue Bell ranked No. 9. According to the report, other Blue Bell flavors add in modified food starch, artificial colors, mono and diglycerides, and more.

Many Blue Bunny products are technically not ice cream. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has specific rules on what can and can not be called "ice cream." According to the USDA, ice cream must not weigh less than 4.5 lbs per gallon and contain at least 20% milk solids and 10% milk fat.

Blue Bunny is another reputable ice cream company that can be found in big supermarkets. A single pint of Blue Bunny's Peanut Butter Party ice cream contains nearly 800 calories though - that's almost half your daily calories, which is a lot to devote to just dessert.
