X “Pearl,” the prequel to “X,” focuses on Pearl and shows how truly demented she's always been. Pearl has dreams of becoming a famous dancer, but her strict mother wants her to stay at home doing chores and taking care of her father, who is wheelchair-bound.

Underlying Mental Illness Pearl is undoubtedly a psychopath. She enjoys hurting defenseless beings; befriending predatory beings excites her; she relishes in the idea of her parents demise to perpetuate her goals, and she impulsively destroys anything obstructing said goals.

But what makes A24 films so special? What is that A24 vibe that audiences love? One stand out characteristic would definitely be the outlandish stories and original voice each movie has. While the genre could itself be overdone, A24 movies find a way to subvert them, pushing the boundaries of what is expected.

Pearl serves as a symbol of her mother's shame and triumph. At one point the narrator describes Pearl as "the scarlet letter endowed with life." Like the letter, Pearl is the public consequence of Hester's very private sin. Yet also like the scarlet letter, Pearl becomes Hester's source of strength.

Pearl is described as wild, precocious, and elf-like throughout the novel. She often is found playing in the sunlight in the forest, picking flowers, and dancing. While she begins the book as a baby turning away from the light, she grows into a child of nature, often associated with the light.

Creating Buzz and Anticipation. A critical component of A24's marketing strategy lies in its emphasis on buzz creation and anticipation for its films. Acknowledging the power of social media, A24 utilizes it robustly.

After Suffering Comes New Life. Like a pearl gets a whole life of its own when the oyster is done with it, so the products of human suffering are often in service to a much greater good – sometimes bigger than we can imagine or understand.

A great horror film that captures the dawning age of cinema beautifully well. Also has a great performance by Mia Goth that deserves all the awards she gets for her performance. Instead of lining up the victims and letting Pearl get her Lizzy Borden on, Goth and West ruminate in the age-old debate of nature vs.

Despite Pearl's murderous lack of remorse, it is impossible not to see her as relatable. She represents every Midwestern kid aching to leave their hometown in search of love and acceptance, and West and Goth created one of the most sympathetic horror villains to date.

It is a well crafted story, cleverly peeling back the character of Pearl and providing a great contextualisation to the events of Ti West's X. That being said it totally stands up as a film in its own right for those who haven't seen X. The highlight is the leading performance from Mia Goth.
