There are 3 recommended vaccines:

• Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent vaccine.
• Flublok Quadrivalent recombinant flu vaccine.
• Fluad Quadrivalent adjuvanted flu vaccine.

Ingredients often include deactivated influenza viruses, chemicals that boost the body's response to the vaccine, preservatives to prevent contamination, and stabilizers. The CDC recommend getting a flu shot in September or October, but getting one any time during flu season will help.

The most commonly administered flu vaccine is a quadrivalent vaccine, which provides protection against the four strains of influenza most likely to be circulating each season.

Influenza (flu) vaccines (often called “flu shots”) are vaccines that protect against the four influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Most flu vaccines are “flu shots” given with a needle, usually in the arm, but there also is a nasal spray flu vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of licensed, age-appropriate influenza (flu) vaccines. Options include inactivated influenza vaccines [IIV4], recombinant influenza vaccine [RIV4], and live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV4).

Each year's flu vaccine is made to give the best protection against the strains of flu that are expected to circulate (spread) in the coming season. The trivalent vaccine protects against three of the flu virus strains which are most likely to be around. The quadrivalent vaccine protects against four flu virus strains.

Protection lasts around 6 to 8 months, starting two weeks after you receive the vaccine. Once the season ends, the flu shot does not protect you any longer: you will need a new vaccination for the following year's season.

However, there are some medically accepted side effects of the flu shot. These include serious disease processes such as Guillain Barre Syndrome, or GBS. Other recognized side effects include permanent shoulder injuries related to the administration of the vaccine.
