Jose Diaz-Balart is a highly respected and well-known commercial actor in the television industry. Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1960, Diaz-Balart grew up in a family with a rich tradition of political involvement and activism. He is the brother of Congressional Representatives Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart and the nephew of Fidel Castro's first wife, Mirta Diaz-Balart.
In the early and mid-1980s, Jose Diaz-Balart worked as a news anchor and reporter for Spanish-language television stations in Miami, Florida. In 1987, he joined Telemundo as a national news anchor, where he became a prominent and popular figure among Hispanic viewers. Diaz-Balart remained with Telemundo for more than 20 years, during which time he anchored several different programs and covered some of the biggest news stories in Latin America and the United States.
While working at Telemundo, Diaz-Balart also began to establish himself as a successful commercial actor. He appeared in numerous television ads for major brands like McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, and Chase Bank, using his warm and engaging personality to connect with viewers and sell products. Diaz-Balart's success as a commercial actor only increased his visibility and popularity among Hispanic audiences, making him one of the most recognizable faces in Spanish-language television.
In 2013, Diaz-Balart made a major transition to English-language news when he joined MSNBC as an anchor and correspondent. He has since become a regular host of the network's daytime news programming and has reported on a wide range of stories, from the 2016 presidential election to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite his success in English-language news, Diaz-Balart has not abandoned his roots in the Hispanic community and continues to be an important voice and advocate for Latino issues in the media.
