All supplies of the drug, which contains varenicline and can reduce nicotine cravings, were recalled on October 14 last year due to unacceptably high levels of a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitroso-varenicline, which is a probable carcinogen.

In July 2021, Pfizer halted the production of Chantix (varenicline tartrate) and recalled select lots due to elevated nitrosamine levels. This recall created a shortage of an effective treatment for tobacco and nicotine dependence.

Who should not take Champix? In general Champix is considered to be a safe medication for most people. Some caution should be taken in certain patients, particularly those with mental health problems.

Champix (also called varenicline) is not currently available in the UK or Europe. It has been withdrawn as a precaution, because of an impurity found in the medicine. It may be unavailable long-term. It's not yet known whether it will be available again in future.

Class 2 Medicines Recall: Pfizer Ltd, Champix (all strengths) film-coated tablets, EL (21)A/25. Pfizer Ltd are recalling all in-date batches of Champix (varenicline) as a precautionary measure due to presence of levels of N-nitroso-varenicline above the acceptable level of intake.

Lots of CHAMPIX (varenicline) that were found to contain levels of N- nitroso-varenicline above Pfizer's acceptable level of daily intake are being recalled. Out of an abundance of caution, Pfizer is pausing distribution of product pending further testing.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowed the distribution and use of the Canadian generic Apo-varenicline (varenicline tartrate) soon after the initial recall of Chantix.

Chantix (varenicline) and bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) are two effective prescription smoking cessation medications. Studies suggest that Chantix is more effective than bupropion for helping you initially quit smoking, but both are similarly effective at getting you to stay away from smoking long term.
