A legion is a horde or a large number of people or things. It was originally a term for a military unit. In Roman times, a legion was a large unit of men in the army, and the word is still used in many militaries. However, it also means a whole bunch of people doing anything.

The Legion of Christ is part of the Regnum Christi Federation, a group of various entities within the Catholic Church. The Legionaries of Christ has religious communities in 21 countries.

Legion Branches are central places for people to gather and feel connected to their neighbours. In many places, they serve as the primary community centre, hosting weddings, town meetings, community BBQs, memorial services, and other important events and activities. Legion Branches are the cornerstones of communities.

The Legion's initial main objective was to provide a strong voice for First World War Veterans. However, the advent of the Second World War created a host of new demands. The Legion expanded to offer more dedicated support to Veterans, as well as those serving abroad.

American Legion Post No. 1, Wheeling American Legion Post No. 1, Wheeling, is the country's oldest legion chapter. Organized by Joe Reass, Tom Cummins, George Houston, P. J. McGinley, and Edmund Lee Jones, the group met at the Laconia building, on the night of March 1, 1919, to form a World War Veterans of America organization.

In 1919, The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation's veterans, its servicemembers, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens.
