1942-1954. Hoyt Buck designed what would become the 119 after the US Government requested donations of fixed blade knives to help arm the men fighting during World War II. Starting out in the basement of the church he pastored, Hoyt handcrafted each knife from used file blades and lucite in various colors.

“It's the right size for everything. We had ranchers, soldiers, policemen, electricians, fishermen, hunters - there was nobody that couldn't find a use for that knife and didn't have that knife hanging on their belt.” Today, Buck Knives manufactures its products in Post Falls, Idaho.

It was a very simple operation. But they were the only ones that were doing it. And open it where you don't have the thumb studs now you could still open it one-handed.

In fact, one of the most famous and recognizable knives of all time, the 119 Speical, dates back to WWII. It's hard to imagine this line got its start in the 1940's when Buck Knives founder, Hoyt Buck, was tempering file blades and molding Plexiglas handles to donate knives to our troops during WWII.

Still, because every knife was handmade, Buck produced only about 25 units a week. As a result, Buck knives were extremely expensive, and their market was extremely small. Al and his son, Frank, clearing the site for construction of an addition to the old plant for their lawn mowing operation.

Post Falls, Idaho In 2005, Buck Knives moved their facility to Post Falls, Idaho where they continue to craft the Model 119 knife, as well as many other trustworthy products.
