Norway The legendary Stressless® recliner was born on the west coast of Norway, in the small community of Sykkylven, where our main factory still lies. Jens Ekornes founded the company in 1934, after which an unbroken lineage of proud craftsmen have produced some of the world's finest furniture.

Somerset, NJ North American sales offices are located in Somerset, NJ. We partner with a network of approximately 700 retailers in the US, Canada and Mexico to distribute products in North America.

Ekornes is the largest producer of furniture in Norway. The company owns the brands Ekornes®, Stressless®, Svane® and IMG. Stressless® is one of the world's most well-known furniture brands, while the brands Ekornes® and Svane® are most famous in Norway. IMG is marketed mainly in the USA and Australia.

In 1934, Jens Ellingsen Ekornes (pictured) founded a furniture company. Soon thereafter, the J. E. Ekornes Fjærfabrikk (Spring Factory) – which had just three employees and used machines made in Germany – found their first customers and began successfully selling springs for furniture and mattresses throughout Norway.

1971: The first Stressless® is introduced The first Stressless® was launched in Norway and immediately became the first real TV chair. You could lean backwards and rest, watch TV in comfort or turn around to face the coffee table with one easy movement.
