Basically, Stitch Fix promised something it could not deliver at any sort of scale. It's possible that at a high enough volume, some of the inventory costs would have been more manageable, but there was no easy (or likely possible) way to deliver personal service using AI.

Since it was first founded back in 2011, Stitch Fix has gone on to generate huge success. The company posted seven consecutive quarters of more than 20% growth in revenue since 2017 (which was the year it became a public company). It also saw sales in Q3 2019 grow 29% to reach $408.9 million.

The brand's current CEO, Elizabeth Spaulding, who joined the company as president in 2020 and took over as CEO in August 2021, will be stepping down effective immediately, Lake said. “I will be stepping in as interim CEO and leading the search process for our next CEO,” Lake said Thursday.

Stitch Fix strikes a good balance between quality and affordability, like what you might find at Macy's. Prices for adult clothes range from $50 to $200 per item. “The quality of the clothing doesn't make it feel like you're getting ripped off - it's clearly higher-end stuff,” said reviewer Kristin Hillery.

That continues a string of red ink for the online personal styling service that started in 2021. Although Stitch Fix is losing money, its balance sheet shows that it still has plenty of room to run.

Its decision came down to its ongoing strategy refocusing, initiated in a bid to improve efficiency and maintain profitability.

Upon opening a Stitch Fix account, you'll be charged a $20 styling fee, which is credited toward any pieces you keep. The $20 fee applies to every Fix, but so does the credit. As long as you plan on keeping at least one item from each box, the service is essentially free. In that way, Stitch Fix is definitely worth it.

Reading into that trend, it appears customers who tried the service weren't impressed enough to keep using it. The company's active client count fell 11% year over year in the fiscal third quarter of 2023, and revenue per active client dropped 9%. That's a double whammy of bad news.

Interactive chart of historical stock value for Stitch Fix over the last 10 years. The value of a company is typically represented by its market capitalization, or the current stock price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. Stitch Fix market value as of October 02, 2023 is $0.4B.
