While Heartgard Plus and Heartgard for dogs may sound similar, there is a fundamental difference between the two. While Heartgard offers protection against heartworm disease alone, Heartgard Plus tablets are effective against three types of worms, including heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm.

Heartgard Plus® is indicated for use in dogs to prevent canine heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for a month (30 days) after infection, and for the treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms.

Even though the dose of a HEARTGARD Plus chew only remains in the dog for a few days, each HEARTGARD Plus chew works by affecting parasitic infections acquired during the previous month/30 days.

It contains 2 medications: ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate. Ivermectin prevents heartworm disease by killing heartworm larvae that have infected your dog during the previous 30 days. By killing the larvae, HEARTGARD Plus stops larvae from developing into juvenile and adult heartworms, thereby preventing the disease.

Heartworm treatment is expensive due to several factors: Heartworm medications are relatively new, and their high price is attributed to research and development costs. Moreover, the medication is often imported, making it more expensive to obtain.

HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) Chewables, given orally using the recommended dose and regimen, are effective against the tissue larval stage of D. immitis for a month (30 days) after infection and, as a result, prevent the development of the adult stage.
