Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the tiny Canadian town of Gander opened its doors to 6,122 passengers and 473 crew members. It may have been over 20 years ago that people in America woke up to see terrorists flying aircraft into the twin towers.

Five days SAYING GOODBYE. Five days after the planes had landed in Gander, the call came that aircraft were permitted to leave. Buses rounded up the passengers who'd been scattered across the local towns.

Gander was the site of a major aircraft accident, Arrow Air Flight 1285, on 12 December 1985. 256 people were killed in the disaster, probably caused by ice contamination on the wings, making it the deadliest air crash ever to happen in Canada.

Gander's name derives from the river (and the abundant wild geese in the area) that feeds the lake. Pop. (2006) 9,951; (2011) 11,054.

Gander International Airport Gander has had a long history with aviation. During World War II, as the only operative airport in this maritime area, it became the main staging point for the movement of Allied aircraft to Europe.

More than 6,600 passengers and airline crew members - equivalent to 66% of the local population at the time - were forced to stay in the Gander area for up to six days until airspace was reopened.
