Gerber was founded in 1927 in Fremont, Michigan, by Daniel Frank Gerber, owner of the Fremont Canning Company, which produced canned fruit and vegetables. At the suggestion of a pediatrician, Gerber's wife, Dorothy, began making hand-strained food for their seven-month-old daughter, Sally.

In 1928, Gerber held a contest to find a face to represent their baby food advertising campaign. Ann Turner Cook's portrait – with her tousled hair and bright eyes – was sketched and entered, and Gerber selected her to be their public face. Her portrait would become globally recognized.

There has been much speculation over the years, ranging from Humphrey Bogart to Elizabeth Taylor. But the Gerber baby is actually Ann Turner Cook. At the time the sketch was drawn, she was a four-month-old baby living in the same Connecticut neighborhood as artist Dorothy Hope Smith.
