Its true origin, however, is lesser-known: “Delta” was suggested to airline founder C.E. Woolman by one of his most trusted associates, Catherine FitzGerald. She recommended an homage to the Mississippi Delta region where the airline's predecessor, Huff Daland Dusters, got its start.

Delta's business model focuses on attracting corporate travelers, a segment characterized by high margins and low price sensitivity. Delta also strives for a flexible business model that focuses on shifting their cost structure from fixed to variable costs as much as possible.

Symbolism. First used in 1961, the Delta symbol honors the heritage of the United States Air Force and Space Command. The silver outer border of the delta signifies defense and protection from all adversaries and threats emanating from the space domain.
