Debuting in 1987 as a five-part miniseries and becoming a regular Saturday-morning syndicated series on October 1, 1988, the first animated series follows the adventures of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their allies as they battle the Shredder, Krang, and numerous other villains and criminals in New York City.

Splinter's romantic relationship with Scumbug in Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem led to confusion about his sexuality, but he is not gay. Previous iterations of Splinter in Tmnt have not explored his romantic pursuits, except for his relationship with Tang Shen.
