Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz The character of Charlotte is based on Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a figure whose racial identity has been in question for decades.

While “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” gets some historical facts right, the series makes no promise of historical accuracy. In fact, the opening credits of the show sets the record straight, saying, “It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact.”

Wait, do I need to watch Bridgerton before starting Queen Charlotte? No, but it wouldn't hurt, especially if you like the vibe of the show. The six-episode prequel series goes back in time to explore how a young Queen Charlotte's marriage to King George III sparked both a great love story and a societal shift.

Although not a love match, George and Charlotte's relationship was a strong one from the beginning. At a ball following the wedding, the king told a courtier that he was “too happy” with his new queen. The couple did not lead separate lives, as suggested in the Netflix show.

After Charlotte marries the king, he separates himself from her, causing tension in their new relationship. Episode four of "Queen Charlotte" reveals that the king is suffering from some sort of mental health disorder, causing him to black out and hallucinate.

In 1761, aged 17, Charlotte found herself chosen by George III as his bride. She had good royal and Protestant credentials. Most importantly for the King, she was sweet natured and compliant. Charlotte also had 'a most agreeable countenance' without being ravishingly beautiful.

The introduction of Queen Charlotte serves to emphasize this sense of matriarchy, as well as to ground it in real life. Queen Charlotte really did run the country for a time due to King George's ill health, and at some points in her life she did indeed dominate Regency society and the various balls.

Contrary to the show, George was actively part of the search for his wife. According to historian Catherine Curzon's piece for History Extra, George picked Charlotte specifically because she was a good royal and was, more importantly, protestant. He also liked that she was said to be amenable.

She is secretly an undercover spy working with Russia to steal top secret files from the Royal Family and let them have it. She is voiced by Sophie Turner.

While the reality of King George III and Queen Charlotte does not exactly match the show, recorded history does tell us that they were two people who loved each other very much, had 15 children together, and even slept in the same bed when that was quite outside the norm for their class.

The reason? Girls carry a larger potential for fashion influence. Valuation experts at Brand Finance Group predicted when Charlotte was an infant that she will have a larger influence than her brother, due to the fashion and marketing opportunities that brands have when a little princess wears their pieces.
