PepsiCo is kicking off 2023 by introducing a new lemon-lime soda drink. Starry soda has officially replaced Sierra Mist nationwide in a bid to challenge Sprite's (a Coca-Cola product) dominance in the category. PepsiCo describes the caffeine-free soda as “easy-to-drink” and “optimally sweet.”

In January 2023, Starry replaced Sierra Mist as Pepsi's lemon-lime flavored drink, in part because Sierra Mist failed to gain market share in the growing category. Starry contains no caffeine, and as of April 2023 is available in Regular and Zero-Sugar varieties.

According to Delish, the difference between Starry and Sierra Mist is subtle but definitive, stemming largely from the different sweeteners used in each beverage.

CARBONATED WATER, SUGAR, NATURAL FLAVOR, CITRIC ACID, POTASSIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), POTASSIUM CITRATE, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (TO PROTECT FLAVOR).

Ingredients: INGREDIENTS: CARBONATED WATER, SUGAR, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR, POTASSIUM CITRATE, POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVES FRESHNESS).

0.1% PepsiCo, which produced Sierra Mist, did away with the Sprite competitor last month, acknowledging its small market share (just 0.1% of the overall soda market).

Rising Starry The name also brings to mind quite a few on-message cultural memes. The age-old rhyme “Star light, star bright” emphasizes the soda's lightness (no caffeine, clear color) and its bright lemon-lime flavor - chefs use bright to refer to citrus, acidity, and freshness (think spritz of lime on a taco).

We got an early taste of Starry, and our tasters agreed it was “sweet, but not in an overpowering way.” “The sweetness is front and center and the lemon/lime flavor is subtle,” they say, adding that, while Starry is clear in color like Sprite and 7Up, it struck them as a little less carbonated than those drinks.

Sierra Mist is a lemon-lime flavored soft drink line. Originally introduced by PepsiCo in 1999, it was eventually made available in all United States markets by 2003. The drink was rebranded as Mist Twst in 2016, although it reverted to Sierra Mist in 2018.

No artificial ingredients. With other natural flavors. Made with real sugar. 100% natural flavors.
