Tommy is the story of a “deaf, dumb and blind kid” who, traumatised by an act of violence as a child, suffers from a kind of locked-in syndrome that is never adequately explained. He rises to fame as a pinball wizard and eventually becomes a cult leader, a position he finally rejects.

Yet, the film has aged incredibly well in spite of itself and, like most Ken Russell movies, there's more to it than meets the eye. Tommy at its core is about self-acceptance, learning how to embrace your past in order to accept yourself in the face of societal pressure.

After witnessing his father kill a man, four-year old Tommy retreats into catatonia. He is further injured by abuse from relatives and from numerous medical attempts by his parents to cure him. By accident, Tommy finds his voice through his uncanny ability to play pinball.

Yet, the film has aged incredibly well in spite of itself and, like most Ken Russell movies, there's more to it than meets the eye. Tommy at its core is about self-acceptance, learning how to embrace your past in order to accept yourself in the face of societal pressure.

(iii) Tommy is comparing the television screen with the printed books of earlier times. He thought that after reading such books, one would have to throw them away. However, he would never throw away his telebook.

One of the central themes of Tommy is the play between self and illusory self. It's expressed by Tommy (the real self) who can see nothing but his reflection (illusory self) in the mirror – “There had to be a loophole so I could show this.

Tommy (Roger Daltrey), due to childhood trauma (he sees his mother and her new husband accidentally murder his father), loses his sight, his hearing and his speech.

The performances, music, and the images are what made an impression on me. Tina Turner is unforgettable as the Acid Queen, who promises to make Tommy grow up. Ann-Margret is better than I ever remember her being; she got a Best Actress Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe as Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

After seeing his stepfather murder his father during an argument over his mother, young Tommy goes into shock, suddenly becoming psychosomatically deaf, dumb and blind. As a teenager, Tommy stumbles upon a pinball machine and discovers he is a natural prodigy at the game. Fame and fortune follow for Tommy, as he becomes a pinball champion and later the messiah of a religious cult, which views his pinball skills as a miraculous sign of divine intervention.Tommy / Film synopsis
