CUERVO WAS THE FIRST PRODUCER OF TEQUILA IN THE WORLD. Jose Antonio de Cuervo y Valdes obtained land from the King of Spain in 1758 and began producing tequila – all before Mexico became an independent republic.

The family crest can be found on every bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequila. The crest symbol is a true testament to the family's rich tequila producing heritage. It consists of a crow, cuervo in Spanish, blue agave plant, and the blending iron of the Hacienda Solar de las Animas, owned by José Antonio de Cuervo.

Distilled from at least 51% blue Weber agave, the remaining 49% can be other sugars (usually sugarcane or corn syrup). Gold is not aged; caramel coloring provides color. Blanco is not usually barrel aged, but can be up to 30 days. Reposado is aged at least 2 months.

Especial Silver is a very affordable tequila, going for less than $20 a bottle, and it makes a passable margarita. But there's not much else good to say about it. Virtually any 100% blue agave tequila, including Cuervo's own Platino expression, are preferable.

Tequila first came into existence in 250-300 A.D. when the Aztec Indians produced a fermented juice of the agave for their ceremonial wine, 'plaque'. This liquid was very important to Aztec culture as they worshipped two Gods – Mayahuel (the goddess of the Maguey) and her husband Patecatl, the god of pulque.

By 1795, after first attempting to prohibit foreign distilleries, King Carlos IV granted Jose María Guadalupe Cuervo y Montana the first (as in first-ever) license “to produce and distribute tequila” in the rich, volcanic soils of what is known today as Jalisco, Mexico.

Made from less than 100% blue agave, Jose Cuervo Especial Silver is not the best bottle from Cuervo, and not really even a good tequila.

Love the peppery notes at the end. Best affordable and practical tequila I've ran across yet. I haven't found a better tequila for a Margarita yet.
