Salonpas, which is lidocaine patch 4%, contains the maximum strength of lidocaine (4%) available over the counter without a prescription. It is used to provide temporary relief of minor aches and pain associated with back, neck, shoulders, knees and elbows.

Salonpas Pain Patch (for the skin) is used for temporary relief of minor aches and pains caused by strains, sprains, arthritis, bruising, nerve pain, simple backache, or pain in the lower spine. Salonpas Pain Patch may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

The thinness and flexibility of Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch makes them extremely discreet and allows them to stick firmly to any shape of the body, even over joints. Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch can be worn for up to 12 hours, day and night, and is clinically proven to provide long-lasting relief.

You must use only one patch at a time, and it should be left in place for 8 to 12 hours. If you are still in pain, you can remove the patch and apply another one. The directions state that you should use no more than two patches a day and for no more than three days in a row.

When used sparingly and as directed, topical lidocaine is generally safe. However, misuse, overuse, or overdose can lead to a number of serious health problems and even death. Ingestion of lidocaine can cause numbness of the mouth and throat, which can lead to trouble swallowing and even choking.

If you wear too many lidocaine transdermal patches or topical systems or wear them for too long, too much lidocaine may be absorbed into your blood. In that case, you may experience symptoms of an overdose.

Apply sticky side of patch to affected area. Use one patch for up to 24 hours. Discard patch after single use. Children under 12 years of age: consult a physician.

Can I use Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch on an ongoing basis? Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch temporarily relieves symptomatic pain associated with strains and sprains. If your symptoms persist beyond 3 days, you should stop using and seek medical attention from your doctor.

Applied either by injection, inhalation, or as a topical agent to provide anesthesia, lidocaine has a good safety margin before reaching toxic blood levels. Since it can be applied in various forms to the same patients, however, care must be taken to keep track of the total dose given to minimize its systemic toxicity.

Check with your doctor right away if you or your child has the following symptoms after receiving this medicine: pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nails, confusion, headache, lightheadedness, fast heartbeat, or unusual tiredness or weakness.
