The Whale follows a reclusive online English instructor named Charlie (Brendan Fraser), who is extremely overweight and suffering from congestive heart failure after letting things “get out of control,” as he says, in the aftermath of his partner's death.

The film suggests redemption has to be earned, and Charlie works hard for it, but that it must also come from the desire to make amends, to begin with. The Whale also touches upon the theme of being oneself no matter what others think.

The Whale is not based on a true story. It is a work of fiction, even if the play was inspired by Hunter's life. Brendan Fraser's character, Charlie, is not a real person, nor are any of the characters in the film based on real people.

This is typical of films adapted from stage plays, as The Whale was adapted from the screenwriter's (Samuel D. Hunter) stage play of the same name. Aronofsky paints a picture of this man's life so bleak and pathetic that it was often difficult to watch - and some might say over the top.

Why is The Whale being accused of fatphobia? Some of the film's critics believe it perpetuates tired tropes of fat people as suffering, chronically depressed and binge eating.

The importance of balance, understanding and mutual respect – toward others and toward oneself. Such messages and themes are put forth with power and aplomb in the new movie, “The Whale,” subtly at first and then with the force of a ton of bricks.
