MiraLAX is classified as an osmotic laxative. This means that it works by drawing water into the colon. The water softens the stool and may naturally stimulate the colon to contract.

If Miralax doesn't work after a week or so, contact your healthcare provider. There may be something more serious going on, like a blockage in your intestines.

The North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) supports the use of Miralax in kids. And because it's well tolerated, easy to use, and doesn't taste bad, it's often one of the first treatments recommended for kids age 16 and younger.

MiraLAX is a laxative solution that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. MiraLAX is used as a laxative to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements.

In general, bulk-forming laxatives, also referred to as fiber supplements, are the gentlest on your body and safest to use long term. Metamucil and Citrucel fall into this category.

Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea that doesn't stop, stomach/abdominal pain that is severe or doesn't go away, an excessive number of bowel movements, bloody stools, or rectal bleeding while using this medication. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.

How many days can I use MiraLAX®? You should use MiraLAX® for no more than seven days. If you need to use a laxative for longer than one week, stop use and consult your doctor.

Medications containing PEG 3350 are not labeled for use in anyone under 17, but MiraLAX is often recommended off-label by pediatricians to treat chronic constipation in kids - sometimes for extended periods of time, even though the label advises “use no more than 7 days.”

Most kids need 6-12 months of regular Miralax use. This regular use generally starts 1-2 times/day, but can wean down to a few times per week if they eat enough high fiber foods, drink enough water, and take the time to sit on the toilet daily.

For relief of constipation, you can take one dose of MiraLAX at any time of the day for up to 7 days. You may prefer to take it early in the day so that it's less likely you will have a bowel movement during bedtime or late at night. MiraLAX usually produces a bowel movement in 1 to 3 days.

Compared to Dulcolax, Miralax can take longer to work. But it tends to cause fewer side effects than other laxatives.
