Conceptually the Clarity plug-in's powertrain is closest to that in the Chevrolet Volt. It's a serial hybrid in which the internal-combustion engine is used to turn a generator that produces current to charge batteries for an electric motor that primarily drives the vehicle.

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine (212 horsepower, 232 lb-ft) with an electric-motor hybrid system and a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery. On a full charge, the battery provides up to 47 electric-only miles of range.

With a plug-in hybrid, you might be able to commute and run your daily errands without ever using the gas motor, and because of the backup gas-powered engine, you won't have to worry about getting stranded without a charge on long trips.

In a plug-in hybrid, the electric battery is the primary power source for the car. When the battery runs down, the internal combustion engine takes over. In a full hybrid, the battery only provides enough power for driving the car at slower speeds - in residential areas and cities, for example.

The overall sales of the Clarity were not too high, at just 1,896 during the first five months of this year, and we believe that the Clarity Fuel Cell sales were very low. The decision means that the U.S. market is losing a plug-in hybrid with the longest-range (47 miles/76 km in EV mode).

The Honda Clarity Electric has a DC fast charge option, and charges at a rate of up to 55 kW. The Clarity Electric uses the SAE Combined Charging Connector (CCS) for Level 3 DC fast charge. The DC Fast Charging enables your Honda Clarity Electric to charge to about 80% capacity in 30 minutes, adding around 70 miles.

Advantages of plug-in hybrid cars The primary advantage of a PHEV is that it offers the low running costs, low emissions, and possible tax incentives of an electric vehicle without the range anxiety.

PHEVs have a larger battery than regular hybrids have, so they can be driven farther and more often on electric power.

How is it reliability wise? Yeah Honda built its reputation on making cars that last, and you can expect the Clarity to be no different. They made a recall on the A/C condenser which is known to fail due to a manufacturing error. You can have it replaced for free under Honda's warranty.

On paper, plug-in hybrids are more efficient than a self-charging hybrid, the bigger battery means a PHEV can cover more miles in 100% electric mode. However, this isn't a disadvantage if you're primarily using the car for city driving.

Depending on how often and how far you drive on electric mode, you may not save much fuel or emissions compared to a regular hybrid. PHEVs also have heavier batteries that add weight and reduce cargo space. The main drawback is twice the powertrains - twice the costs, complexity & confusion.

The main difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles is that plug-in hybrid vehicles can be driven using nothing but electric power - at least for short distances.
