Zelle® works between U.S.-based banks. Which means, even if you bank somewhere different than your friends and family do,1 you can still use Zelle® to safely send and receive money straight from your banking app.

In most cases, the answer is no. Peer-to-peer payment systems like Zelle (along with Cash App and Venmo) treat transactions like cash - meaning there's no way to cancel a Zelle payment once it's been sent. Even worse, unlike other payment apps such as Venmo, Zelle doesn't offer any form of payment protection.

Workarounds for using Zelle without a bank account One workaround is to use a prepaid debit card. Some prepaid cards work with Zelle. You can also consider using a friend or family member's account. They can receive the money through Zelle and then give it to you.

In general, most Zelle payments are completed within minutes or hours of being sent. However, some transactions may take up to three days to process depending on various factors such as network speed and availability of funds in both parties' accounts.

When a payment is sent with Zelle®, the recipient has 14 calendar days to accept it. If the payment is not accepted in time, it will be canceled, and refunded to your account. The refund can take up to three business days to be credited and notification will be sent to you and your recipient.
