Gallery wrapped canvas is a method of displaying paintings wherein the edge of the canvas is stretched over the frame and completely covers the stretcher bars beneath: you will not see the staples, the stretcher bars are usually thicker, and the overall presentation is sleek.

A stretched canvas is just canvas that has been stretched on stretcher bars, gallery wrapped is a sub-set of stretched canvases. Gallery wrap basically means that the canvas has been stapled to the back of the stretchers rather than the edges, and I think the rest is speculative. Usually the edges are at least primed.

There are two major fibre types used to make canvas: cotton and linen (flax). Some speciality fibres such as hemp and jute are also used for canvas – we do jute, and although it is a different fibre it is usually considered an extra-rough linen because it is very similar.

So, what does a wrapped canvas mean? In short, it refers to the edges of the canvas that is wrapped around the internal frame which will be on show when hanging on your wall, it is not referring to the main front face of the canvas.

Gallery wrap extends and folds your artwork all the way to the sides to completely cover the wood frame. Museum wrap also covers the wood frame but instead of extending your artwork, you choose between white or black wrapping color. Your artwork is limited to the front of the canvas.

Of course there are some instances when you may not need a frame. If your work is on a deep gallery wrapped canvas and you've painted around the sides, your work may be presentable without a frame.

Linen canvas is regarded as superior to cotton canvas because the threads are narrower (finer) and the weave tighter. (And Belgian linen the best of all linens). Once stretched and primed, linen canvas is less likely to stretch or shrink, or threads move or distort.

A good canvas will be tight, but will not tear in the corners where it's wrapped. A loosely stretched canvas is the worst!

Canvas is naturally water-resistant, and contemporary forms of industrial canvas commonly feature polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating on one or both sides for additional waterproofing.

A canvas print is a rather sturdy piece composed of a hardwood frame with canvas fabric stretched across it. A photo poster, on the other hand, is a simple paper-thin format suited for a lighter subject – perhaps a group shot of the cast members from your favorite TV series.

What is Canvas Made of? Canvas is a strong and durable fabric created with hemp. In more modern times, cotton and linen have replaced hemp. Most of the canvas prints that you buy for your home use cotton or polyester.

So basically gallery wrap canvas has a very thick edge. It's usually at least 11/2 inch think and it has no side staples and it's made to be hung without a frame.
