Hard Mountain Dew is a malt beverage, with 5% alcohol by volume. It was first released in 2022, and a new flavor, Livewire, just came out in March 2023.

There's not an overly heavy flavor of alcohol, which is nice, but it really tastes like cough syrup, especially with the carbonation vanishing so quickly. Overall, I definitely wouldn't try this one again. As for the Hard Mountain Dew, it's been hit-or-miss where you can find it.

Where those hard seltzer drinks have a bit of a “Oh dang, there's booze in this!” kick at the end of a swig, Hard Mountain Dew holds strong. In other words, it just tastes like Mountain Dew, but it'll get you drunk if you let it.

5% alcohol is 10 proof which is what a moderate beer is. light beer is 3.5 percent alcohol. wine is 12 to 14 percent alcohol and hard liquor starts around 40% or 80 proof and goes up to 190 proof which is grain alcohol or more commonly known as moonshine.

"Malted beverages can cause increases in blood pressure, especially those with alcoholic content," Dr. Krakower says. "This may depend on the frequency of use. Regular or binge drinkers of alcoholic beverages can show signs of elevated blood pressure and other cardiac conditions."

Malt liquor isn't “liquor” in the sense that it's not a distilled spirit like vodka or whiskey. Many malt liquor brands have a high alcohol content but they're nowhere near as strong as spirits. Boiled like beer and fermented with yeast, they're spiritually much closer to the light lager beer style.

The bottom line: Mountain Dew is polarizing. For years, friends have ridiculed me for drinking "battery acid." Adding alcohol doesn't change that. If you abhor the syrupy sweetness of malt beverages, like my colleagues in Richmond, steer clear. If, like me, you regularly Do the Dew, give it a try.
