The chicken nugget was invented in the 1950s by Robert C. Baker, a food science professor at Cornell University, and published as unpatented academic work. This bite-sized piece of chicken, coated in batter and then deep fried, was called the "Chicken Crispie" by Baker and his associates.

But the chicken only adds up to 45 percent of a McNugget - as the rest of the recipe is a combination of batter, seasoning and oil. They are lightly battered before being covered in a second coat of tempura batter, which gives them the signature crisp we all know and love.

The ground chicken meat then gets shaped by a machine into classic nugget shapes. The chicken nuggets are then covered by a layer of breading (light batter), followed by another layer of thicker tempura batter. The nuggets are par fried (which means partially cooked to be cooked fully later) and then flash frozen.

Not all breaded and fried chicken pieces are the same: classic chicken tenders should be made from the chicken breast's tender (more on that below), while nuggets are primarily made from the ground and processed chicken meat including breast and thigh meat that is then formed into nuggets, dinos, and even rings.
