1985 Although Dairy Queen entered the ice cream scene in 1940, it didn't introduce the Blizzard until 1985. Samuel Temperato, who eventually operated more than 80 Dairy Queens in Missouri, was given credit by DQ officials for creating the Blizzard.

April's debut, dubbed the Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard, blends vanilla soft serve with Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cookie dough balls and fudge, creating what the company joked on Instagram was a “cookie cartwheel.” Like all Blizzards, the ice cream snack is available in four sizes: mini, small, medium, and large.

To make this DQ Blizzard, all you have to do is blend the ice cream until it's soft and reassembles the texture of soft serve. Once it's smooth enough, add the Oreo cookies and continue to mix until the cookies are crushed and combined with the ice cream.

By 1983, Temperato proposed the idea of a frozen treat made with super-thick soft serve, throwing in bits of fruit and candy to compliment the product. Using a phrase Dairy Queen had trademarked in the 1950's, the Blizzard would eventually make its debut in 1985, selling 100 million units in its first year alone.

Blizzards technically aren't ice cream That's because they can't! According to the FDA, a product must contain at least 10 percent butterfat or milkfat to be called ice cream, and DQ's soft serve only has 5 percent - hence why it's always referred to as a Blizzard “treat.”
