For Thomas they used their 1979 model of a LB&SCR model of a Class E2 tank engine which they suitably altered with a face and extended tanks to look like Thomas. Many of the characters in the 'Railway Series' books were thus modelled (with faces) by Hornby, including characters added for the television series.

First of all, all kids love trains. Second, the faces on the trains are happy and inviting and give a human characteristic to their imagination as they play. I also find that the track, trains and cars are so easy for a child to build and tear down and build again. They just love to create and play.

Even though Thomas the Tank Engine is aimed at children, adults can enjoy it just as much as kids.

Are Trackmaster trains compatible with wooden train tracks? Yes…to some extent. Trackmaster wheels are the same gauge (width) as wooden trains, so the trains will run on wooden tracks. However, they can't take the tighter curves under their own power without derailing, and they won't go up the bridges.
