Pernod Ricard Malibu was created in the 1980s and although it is owned by Pernod Ricard, the name The Twelve Island Shipping Company that's on the bottle was responsible for the early distribution of Malibu in the dozen islands of the lower Antilles. Malibu is made by the West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd in the Caribbean (Barbados).

If it's not at least 40% ABV, it can't legally be considered a rum. At 21% ABV, Malibu doesn't qualify. So it needs to be judged on its own merits for what it actually is: a rum-based liqueur, or as it says on the bottle, “Caribbean rum with coconut liqueur.”

The recommended shelf life for Malibu Original is 2 years. This guarantees the most refreshing taste and experience. While the product can still be safely consumed after 2 years, the flavors will begin to fade and you won't get the excellent Malibu quality you'd expect.
