The insulin detemir (rys), or “Levemir®”, in Levemir® FlexPen® is a long-acting insulin used to treat diabetes mellitus. It may be used in combination with oral antidiabetic medicines (diabetes tablets) or as add-on therapy to liraglutide (Victoza®), which is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.

Levemir is a long-acting insulin analogue used as a basal insulin. Levemir is for subcutaneous administration only. Levemir must not be administered intravenously, as it may result in severe hypoglycaemia. Intramuscular administration should also be avoided.

Same Insulin, Different Pen. Starting early February, Levemir® FlexTouch® (NDC: 0169-6438-10) is being phased out and replaced with Levemir® FlexPen® (NDC: 0169-6432-10). In order to minimize disruption, please make sure your patients have an updated prescription for Levemir® FlexPen® (NDC: 0169-6432-10).

Novo Nordisk insulin Insulin degludec injection (Tresiba®): Pen and vial, throw away after 56 days. Insulin detemir injection (Levemir®): Pen and vial, throw away after 42 days. Isophane insulin human suspension (Novilin® N NPH): Vial – 42 days; pen – 28 days.

Both Levemir and Lantus are preferred over NPH insulin because they have a longer duration of action, a less pronounced peak, and are more consistent in their effects with less risk of hypoglycemia. Both Levemir and Lantus are clear solutions, unlike NPH which requires resuspension prior to injection.

Official answer. Levemir (detemir) and Lantus (glargine) are both long acting insulins and no difference has been found in their efficacy however, weight gain and night-time hypoglycemia appear to be less with Levemir.

They're similarly effective and can cause comparable side effects. The biggest difference between them is that Levemir may require twice-daily injections at lower doses. Lantus can typically be injected once a day at any dose. Experts don't recommend one insulin over the other.

The usual dosage range is 0.1 units/kg to 0.2 units/kg once per day in the evening. Another Levemir dosage option for type 2 diabetes is twice-daily dosing. If your doctor recommends Levemir dosing twice daily, you'll inject your first dose in the morning and your second dose in the evening.

It is best to refrigerate all unopened insulin products. Unopened insulin detemir may also be stored at room temperature, but it must be thrown away after 42 days. Opened insulin detemir vials may be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
