September 29, 2023 Similasan recently received warning letters from the FDA which brought up several concerns that the FDA had about the marketing and manufacturing of homeopathic eye drops and the safety of one of the preservatives used in their manufacture, silver sulfate.

You can use eye drops with preservatives up to four times a day. But using the preservative drops more often can cause eye irritation. Nonpreservative eye drops come in packages that contain multiple single-use vials.

Artificial tears can be used multiple times a day, but may only be needed once a day. Some lubricating eye drops have preservatives in them. When there are preservatives, the shelf life of them is lengthened. The downside of this is that they cannot be used more than 4 times a day because they can cause irritation.

For drops that are required twice a day, the ideal dosing regimen is every 12 hours, and for drops that are dosed three times a day, the ideal dosing regimen is every 8 hours. However, sometimes that is not practical, and wiggle room of an hour or two (early or late) should be fine.

It's never recommended to use expired eye drops. That's because they can become less effective or contaminated over time. Opened bottles of eye drops are more likely to become contaminated. So, they should only be used for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer.

Answer: Unless otherwise noted in the package insert, eye drops should stay safe and effective until the expiration date if used and stored correctly. Once the sterile seal of the bottle is broken, there is concern for contamination, especially if the tip of the bottle touches your eye or any other surface.

For eye infections: For ophthalmic dosage form (eye drops): Adults and children 2 months of age and older - Use one drop in the affected eye(s) every 3 hours for 7 to 10 days. Your doctor may tell you to use the drops more often during severe infections.
