Over the last 30 years, Mercy Ships has been based exclusively in Africa, serving the nations of Benin, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Madagascar, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Togo.

Sierra Leone Mercy Ships to Sail to Sierra Leone In August 2023, the largest civilian hospital vessel, the Global Mercy, will sail into the port of Freetown, marking the sixth Mercy Ships field service over the span of 30 years to this nation.

Mercy Ships delivers free, safe medical care to the world's least-developed countries. Our hospital ships are crewed by volunteers who treat dental and eye problems, cleft lips and palates, benign tumours, Noma, club feet, obstetric fistulas, burn contractures and various other conditions.

The mercy seat was the place of transference of sin for forgiveness, of reconciliation between God and His people. Joseph Prince puts it this way: “As long as the blood was there on the mercy seat, He [God] saw only the blood and accepted the people.”

Don Stephens founded Mercy Ships in 1978 with the purchase of the Anastasis, where he and his family lived for ten years. During his time as President, Don directed and led thousands of professional volunteers from over 60 nations as well as employees in offices in 16 countries.

MERCY is a 1,000 bed hospital ship commissioned in 1986, with a military cadre crew of approximately eight Officers and 53 Enlisted personnel and a civilian mariner cadre crew of approximately 15 personnel while in a Reduced Operating Status (ROS).

In accordance with the Geneva Conventions, Mercy and her crew do not carry any offensive weapons, though defensive weapons are available.

• To shelter the homeless.
• To visit the sick.
• To visit the imprisoned, or ransom the captive.
• To bury the dead.
