COLUMBIA, S.C. - Tom Steyer, the billionaire former hedge-fund executive whose prolific campaign spending altered the Democratic primary and allowed him to persist in the race, withdrew after an apparent third-place finish Saturday night in South Carolina.

Steyer sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, but dropped out of the race after the first four state contests, having spent more than $191 million on campaign advertising but failing to obtain any pledged delegates.

In seven months he has blown through that estimate. According to ad-tracking firm Advertising Analytics, Steyer's campaign has spent $145 million on TV, radio and digital advertising since he launched his campaign in July.
