1,179cc V-twin At its heart, the Octane has a new, 1,179cc V-twin that's very closely related on the inside to the 1,133cc powerplant of the Indian Scout. It has a 2mm-larger bore, its own camshafts and tuning, and new cosmetics on its cylinder, cylinder-head, and engine-cover castings.

Not Everyone Was Happy When The Octane Was Launched Sadly, for some, the Victory Octane turned out to be a feet-forward cruiser, although the Project 156 clearly pointed the way to something special in the future and that would turn out to be the Indian FTR1200.

No more Victory-badged bikes were made at the Iowa factory and dealers sold off existing stock. Ultimately though, Victory Motorcycles never really died. Polaris realised that the evocative Indian brand was more popular and they focused their design, development and manufacturing resources on that instead.

The Octane's liquid-cooled, DOHC, 1,179cc V-twin makes 104 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 76 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm (claimed). All of its visible components are unique. With Victory's emphasis on performance - it's new tagline is “Modern American Muscle” - the Octane's engine had to have plenty of kick.

Polaris Industries Building a motorcycle brand from scratch is hard work. Launched by Polaris Industries in 1998, Victory Motorcycles struggled during its first decade to build motorcycles and an identity that resonated with American buyers.

104 hp At 528 pounds claimed dry weight, it's the smallest and lightest motorcycle ever sold by Victory, but with a claimed 104 hp it also has more power than any previous Victory model. That makes it the quickest Victory, too, both from 0-60 mph and in the quarter-mile.

North American models don't offer ABS, while European models have ABS standard (at a higher price). Cast aluminum, 10-spoke wheels are designed for tubeless tires. The front wheel gets a 130/70-18 donut, while the 17-inch rear is wrapped with a 160/70-17 tire. The test bikes were shod with Kenda cruiser tires.

CEO Scott Wine said the 18-year-old subsidiary's sales peaked in 2012 and had been eating money ever since. Polaris Industries Inc. announced it would immediately cease production of its Victory Motorcycles brand, pulling the plug on a business it created in 1998 to compete directly with Harley-Davidson.
