A teddy bear is a stuffed toy that's a small, adorable version of an intimidating, furry mammal. The original teddy bear was named after U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902, the first teddy bears appeared on the toy market. A Brooklyn businessman, Morris Michtom, called the prototype Teddy's bear.

Berryman's cartoon appeared in the Washington Post on November 16, 1902. Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn candy shop owner, saw the cartoon and had an idea. He and his wife Rose also made stuffed animals, and Michtom decided to create a stuffed toy bear and dedicate it to the president who refused to shoot a bear.

In 1981, inspired by the desire to make his son a friend that would last a lifetime, our founder, John Sortino, crafted his first-ever Teddy Bear, Bearcho. His son enjoyed his new friend so much that John began selling these Bears from a cart on Church Street in downtown Burlington, Vermont.

Modern teddy bears tend to have larger eyes and foreheads and smaller noses, babylike features intended to enhance the toy's "cuteness". Some teddy bears are also designed to represent different species, such as polar bears and brown bears, as well as pandas and koalas.
