The Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall brings together business, health care, and philanthropic leaders for a night to make a difference in the fight against cancer and fund life saving research, patient services and programs right here in Philadelphia.

Welcome to the 2023 Holiday Tournament The Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament is a four-day high school boys basketball tournament empowering local high schools along with their coaches, students, and the St. Louis community to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.

Norm Stewart The Coaches vs. Cancer program was founded in 1993 by Norm Stewart, former University of Missouri head basketball coach, when he asked fans to pledge a dollar amount for every 3-point shot made by his team during the season. All pledges were donated to support the fight against cancer.

The origin of the word “coach” It came from the French term coche and also from the Hungarian word kocsi, which meant “carriage”. Carriages were named that way because superior carts and wagons were designed in the small town of Kocs in Hungary. The meaning we use today originated at Oxford University in 1830.

The world of sport has three generally accepted styles of coaching: autocratic, democratic and holistic. Each coaching style has benefits, drawbacks and particular uses, and it's important to understand all three.

For over 30 years, the Coaches vs. Cancer program, in collaboration with the National Association of Basketball Coaches, has united coaches and fans nationwide to help the American Cancer Society defeat a common enemy – cancer. With your passion and dedicated support, the impact has been felt in communities nationwide.

Here is how a true master coach progresses:

Successful coaches match their leadership style to players' skills and personalities, and implement the style that works best for the majority. While every coach is unique, most common coaching styles fall into one of four major categories: democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire, and holistic.
