The KLR is WAY more capable than it looks on paper. With some mods, this would be an off road/adventure weapon. A good set of tyres, decent hand guards, engine protection and harder springs… there wouldn't be many places I wouldn't take this.

75 mph Although the KLR is not a highway bike per se, it happily cruises at 75 mph. But at higher speeds, it would really benefit from a 6th gear.

There are a few that I know of that have more than 100k. Do the doo and make sure the valves are in adjustment and they just keep going as long as you keep oil in it.

34.61 hp As part of the Cycle World testing protocol, we placed our 2022 Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure on our in-house Dynojet 250i dynamometer, recording horsepower and torque figures. The KLR produced a peak 34.61 hp at 5,910 rpm and 33.52 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm.

If you're riding two up on a KLR it's going to limit your off-road ability so much that you'll most likely stick to a fire road or trail that a GS or Tiger would handle no problem. That being the case I'd opt for a bike that would do two up on the road really good, and still do some dirt exploring.

Q: How fast will a KLR650 go? Top speed of the KLR650 is 89 MPH. The previous generation model managed zero-to-60 in 5.9 seconds, so the current model should do at least that well. Intended as a dual-sport off-roader, being fast is not the prime consideration.

More moderate use would easily extend that range well over 300km and, I would expect, 400km is achievable.

Aside from the curiously far-forward footpegs (and slippery for off-road riding footpegs) and the often low-reading fuel gauge, if you're up for an adventure and don't want to spend a lot of money, the $7,900 KLR650 Adventure is money well spent.
