IT STARTS WITH A DREAM. Bacardi is founded on February 4 by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó in Santiago de Cuba, when he buys a small distillery and revolutionizes the rum-making process to create a smooth, light-bodied spirit – what the world now knows as BACARDÍ® rum.

Bacardi is perhaps the most iconic rum in the Americas and is credited with creating such classic cocktails as the Cuba Libre (rum and Coca-Cola) and the daiquiri favored by Ernest Hemingway. Its story dates back to 1862 in Santiago de Cuba and unfolds across the Caribbean and to the United States.

At odds with Bacardi's carefree image, the investigation details how a member of the Bacardi family was involved in plots to overthrow the Cuban government in the 1960s. It also alleges that some members of the Bacardi family supported economic sanctions against Cuba, a policy blamed for leaving thousands in poverty.
