H&R Block has slightly lower prices than TurboTax for most paid versions of its online tax-filing platforms. Keep in mind, however, that both companies may offer special pricing for people who file early during tax season.

Although it's not the most expensive of the tax software providers we reviewed, H&R Block's online tax software isn't the cheapest either. Still, its free version is one of the best on the market: The interface is straightforward and easy to use, and on-screen help from a human is available for an extra cost.

Here is how you import your 1099-R in TurboTax,

1. While in your Tax Home,
2. Select Search from the top right side of your screen,
3. Enter 1099-R,
4. Select Jump to 1099-R.
5. Follow the On-Screen Prompts to complete this section. TurboTax will walk you through.

If you used the TurboTax CD/Download software last year

1. Sign in to TurboTax Online and start a new return, or open or continue a return you already started.
2. Select Tax Tools and then Tools.
3. Select Transfer last year's TurboTax return from your computer.
4. Follow the instructions to finish transferring your file.

Here's where to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

1. Open or continue your return.
2. In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.
3. Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security, and select Show more.
4. Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)

Start by checking if your financial institution or brokerage is a TurboTax 1099 partner (opens new page; scroll down and select the 1099/1098 Partners tab). If your institution isn't on the list, you won't be able to import.
