Frequently Asked Questions about goodyear tv spot, 'sea blimpworthy'

In 1917, Goodyear started making airships (the founding father of today's blimps) for the U.S. Navy. Meanwhile, in 1919 Goodyear was flying an open air cockpit blimp with onlookers gawking down below. By the Roaring '20s, Goodyear Blimps became a mainstay in the sky, from Ohio (Goodyear's home state) to Florida.

There are three Goodyear airships based in the U.S.: Wingfoot Lake in Suffield, Ohio, Pompano Beach, Fl. and Carson, Ca.

The Goodyear Blimp program started in the 1920s and has evolved over the years with new designs and fleet replacements. Goodyear currently operates four blimps, offering sightseeing flights in Europe and flying over sporting events in North America.

Goodyear has been using blimps for advertising since 1925, when it launched the first Goodyear Blimp, Pilgrim, and over the past 90 years dozens of blimps of various types have served as “Goodyear Blimps.”

These properties make blimps ideal for such uses as covering sporting events, advertising and some research, like scouting for whales. Recently, there has been renewed interest in using rigid airships for lifting and/or transporting heavy cargo loads, like ships, tanks and oil rigs, for military and civilian purposes.

Blimps were used by navies during World War I in convoy and antisubmarine patrol duty, became attractions at fairs and expositions, and later carried advertising messages.

Unlike semi-rigid and rigid airships (e.g. Zeppelins), blimps rely on the pressure of the lifting gas (usually helium, rather than hydrogen) inside the envelope and the strength of the envelope itself to maintain their shape.

The usual cruising speed for a blimp is 35 miles per hour in a zero wind condition. Airships can carry enough fuel to fly for twenty-four hours, although they rarely do. Without any lifting gas, the empty ship (GZ-20) weighs about 12,840 pounds.

A blimp is a powered, steerable aircraft that floats because it is inflated with a gas that is lighter than air. A blimp's shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases within its envelope; a blimp has no rigid internal structure, so if a blimp deflates, it loses its shape.

Though blimps played a useful surveillance role in the Second World War, airships today are mostly used for overhead photography at sports events and as massive flying billboards.

And, in the modern era, blimps were used for “advertising, freight transportation, tourism, camera platforms for sporting events, geological surveys, aerial observation, interdiction platforms, advertising, TV coverage, tourism, and some research purposes,” says Wilnechenko.
