Cabbage Kids are a line of cloth dolls with plastic heads first produced by Coleco Industries in 1982. They were inspired by the Little People soft sculptured dolls sold by Xavier Roberts as collectibles. The brand was renamed 'Cabbage Kids' by Roger L.

The Baby Doll character, a common sight during late 19th Century Carnival, is a satirical portrayal of a mother with an illegitimate baby. Often the masquerader portrays a gaily dressed younger woman, with a frilled dress exposing her legs, gloves, and a large poke bonnet or mob cap.

This included children's hair and fingers. The doll also did not feature a power switch to turn off the motor in case of an emergency. As a result of these hazards, Mattel voluntarily recalled the Cabbage Patch Snacktime doll in 1997. You may be entitled to compensation if your child was injured by a dangerous toy.

According to the documentary, Xavier Roberts might not be the true creator of Cabbage Patch Kids. The film says there was a legal battle between Xavier and a folk artist named Martha Nelson Thomas, who passed away in 2013. The movie claims Xavier stole the original design from her.

The dolls attracted the attention of toy manufacturer Coleco, who began mass-production in 1982. Unlike companion dolls, with which children play tea party and dress-up, baby dolls have a specific function in imaginative play. Children primarily treat baby dolls as they would infants - they are toted around in strollers, fed from high chairs, and rocked to sleep like newborns.

Dolls that were signed by creator Xavier Roberts are highly collectible. Look for rare molds and unusual designs. This can include mechanized toys that were recalled, like the Snacktime doll, or molds that fewer dolls were made out of.

The extreme popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids meant they had a high resale value from the beginning. In fact, reports in the early '80s said that the dolls were “re-adopted” for up to 100 times their original price.
